What is the difference between AC and DC chargers?

The battery in your vehicle is a DC battery. It is charged with DC current. However, AC is the most available and widely used because of many advantages such as ease of transmission and ease of generation. AC chargers draw AC current from the power lines and feed it to the onboard chargers available in EV vehicles.

The OBCs convert AC to DC current and then charge the batteries available in the vehicle. With DC chargers, AC is converted to DC in the charger, and in turn, DC current is directly supplied to the vehicle batteries. Hence, it can charge your EV quickly as the output voltage and current is higher. DC chargers are good for high-speed charging and are typically used on highways. AC chargers are slower and are better suited for home and public/city charging.
